The city of Colima, capital of the small Mexican state by the same name, is located in western Mexico.
It was founded in a valley, between the Volcán de Fuego, an active volcano, and the Nevado de Colima, an inactive volcano, generally covered in snow.
Colima is known as the “City of Palms” because its rich vegetation is home to many coconut and banana trees.
Most of the year Colima’s weather is basically unbeatable.
Colima is full of plazas and public gardens, like the Jardín Libertad, or Liberty Garden, in the heart of the city.
Here you can see the Medellín Portal and the Morelos Portal, a row of arches in the northern and southern areas.
Not too far is the beautiful City Cathedral, and next door from it is the Government Palace.
This main square is ideal for a relaxing afternoon.
The museums Colima offers is one of the many things that makes this small city stand out.
Some of the best are the Regional Museum of History, the University Museum of Popular Arts, and the famous University Art Gallery Alfonso Michel,
home to many works by the artist of the same name.
Wejoytrip recommends
The Constitución Pedestrian Street.
This is the main gathering place for the city’s artists.
It is decorated with fountains carved in swans, and is located next to the Minor Basilica.
It is a prime spot for sitting and relaxing, or shopping for local, hand-crafted items and souvenirs.
The second Saturday of every month you can find a market with more options for artisanal jewelry, arts and crafts, local beer, organic produce, and a lot more.
If it is happening during your visit, you cannot miss it!
Pay a visit to the Regional Metropolitan Park, built on plantation land from the 19th century.
It is located only four blocks from Historic Downtown.
The park is divided into two sections.
In one of the sections you can enjoy all sorts of water activities, with swimming pools, wave pools, and slides.
In the other area you will find an artificial lake, grills and eating areas.
You will also find a zoo, where you can find crocodiles, birds, deer, peacocks, and many other animals.
Spend some time at the traditional Álvaro Obregón Market downtown.
Walk through its many halls to buy or admire all the variety of fruits, vegetables, fresh-baked bread, or arts and crafts.
After some walking, if you have worked up an appetite (we recommend this), stop at the food stands and restaurants where you can sample delicious mexican snacks and dishes.
Have a fresh-squeezed juice alongside a plate of enchiladas, or a mouth-watering torta, to name just a few options.
We recommend the Coffee Route.
You can hop on board the Café Bus (Coffee Bus) to do it, starting on Liberty Garden.
It offers a short tour, and a long tour centered around the production of coffee.
In each stop you can learn about the production and nuances of the treatment of the bean, and, more importantly, sample delicious regional coffees.
Other possible destinations for your trip: La Campana Archaeological Zone, fifteen minutes from downtown Colima, or the Archaeological Zone of El Chanal, only a few miles from the city.
In these destinations you can observe and learn about ancient structures and their functions, whether for entertainment, religion, or administration.
