Located in the heart of the Biosphere Reserve Bolsón de Mapimí, a natural area of great beauty and relevance in the movement toward the preservation of diverse ecosystems in the region, is the Magical Town of Mapimí, Durango.
This town has great historical heritage, built over the course of centuries and displayed throughout all of this mining community.
Its beautiful architecture, from the 17th and 18th centuries, is manifested in many of its temples and buildings.
The town is also home to a fascinating cemetery, with tombs of foreigners who worked in the mines, and the accompanying legends which have been wrought around the place over the years.
Wejoytrip recommends The Ojuela Mine.
It is 450 kilometers (279 miles) of tunnels that are living reminders of the process of silver and gold ore extraction, and are now home to a fascinating variety of minerals.
All of this is done with a specialist tour guide, who, oil lamp in hand, will walk you through the dark tunnels.
At the end of the tour you can
observe a mummified mule, and many of the tools used in this mine centuries ago.
There are also other activities, like mountain biking, rappel, spelunking, and camping.
If you are visiting Mapimí, you cannot miss the ghost town of Ojuela.
Its loneliness and quiet make for an eerie environment.
You can find it atop a hill, next to the hanging bridge.
This is a perfect spot for photographers interested in snapping pictures of unique and notable places.
The hanging bridge is also famous throughout Mexico.
It is called the Ojuela Bridge, and today it has a zip line to ride on, if you are interested in something a little more extreme.
Discover the Santiago Apostol Church, built in the 18th century.
It has a lovely facade of chiseled stone, with Mudéjar touches.
We also recommend the Juárez Museum and History of Mapimí and Ojuela, which is home to many documents and references relevant to the history of the region.
