By the edge of a spring, crystalline water flows from deep within the earth’s core, and, surrounded by encino and oyamel trees mixed with a tinge of semi-desert bushes, lies the city of Saltillo, state capital of Coahuila, best known as the Athens of the North because of its great cultural and artistic richness.
The heart of the city, “Plaza de Armas”, you will find the Government’s Palace carved in pink quarry, and within its interiors, a series of murals narrate the story of this great city.
Saltillo’s Casino has a neo-Classic style, and the magnificent Santiago Cathedral has a very distinctive baroque elegance, and it is home of 45 oil paintings, adorned by Salomonic-styled columns.
Other spaces that you most definitely need to visit are the “Liceo de las Artes”, Juárez Precinct, the Municipal Palace, the San Esteban Temple and the city’s theatre, “Fernando Soler”, named after the famous Mexican Golden Era film actor born in these lands.
In Saltillo, you will find a vast quantity of museums that you could visit; we recommend you the
“Museo del Desierto” and the “Museo de las Aves de México” (México’s Bird Museum), the latter containing one of the biggest collections of species for exhibitions.

One of the most important trademarks of Saltillo is its gastronomy, based on beef and goat, having delicious dishes as a result, like the “fritada”, “machaca”, “cortadillo”, the gorditas (flour tortillas), chorizo and a wide variety of cheeses.
The famous pulque bread is known as being a great Saltillo tradition, as well as milk candies, quince caramel, nut cheese and the “suaderos”, which are jelly rolls filled with almond and pine nuts.
If you visit us during the month of August, you will surely find the Santo Cristo de la Capilla festival, where, by means of the Tlaxcaltecas and Matachines dance, gratitude is shown towards God regarding good harvests.
The “Ojo de Agua” (Water Eye) party is celebrated during September with dances and processions.
