Tecate is a Magical Town of colonial style located between sea and desert.
Here, the ancient Kumeyaay people have left their legacy, marvelling national and international visitors alike with ancient paintings depicting geometric figures and anthropomorphic representations.
It is their way of showcasing their understanding of the world and their knowledge of the stars and constellations.
In the Vallecitos area you can find these vestiges in the caves of the mountainous land.
One of the cave paintings that stands out the most is the one called “Diablito,” or “Little Devil,” which, during the winter solstice, is hit by the sun in the eyes, creating an astonishing spectacle.
The San Jose ranch is also home to paintings like these.
The Cuchuma Hill and surroundings merit a visit, with its cliffs and plains opening up the regional landscape to its visitors.
You can hike it or explore it on bike or motorcycle, and you can discover its flora and fauna with an unforgettable natural backdrop for you to take in.
The food comes
mainly from the sea, bountiful helpings of octopus, fish and shrimp.
But you also can’t forget to try the Tecate bread.
You will find two flavors: savory and sweet, but with hundreds of variations within these two categories.
Buy a few pieces and enjoy a simple and delicious breakfast or snack.
Walk around the Zocalo (main square) and the Miguel Hidalgo park, where you can sit in the shade of the trees, or you can buy ice cream or a local drink of fermented corn known as tejuino.
What is a definite must is La Rumorosa park, where you will find a huge green energy complex, with rows of windmills generating energy next to a mountain.
It is called La Rumorosa (which roughly translates to “the bumbler”) because you can hear a distinct noise when the wind hits the rocks.
If you come during winter you can enjoy the snow in the area, changing the landscape entirely.
If you come in July, you will find a traditional folkloric parade, and in August you can visit the regional fair.
Likewise the festivities of the Virgin of Guadalupe, on December 12, are full of fun and charm.
Don’t forget to take a souvenir with you!
