Xochimilco is a breathing vestige of the pre-Hispanic Mexican cultures, located in the south area of Mexico City. This town was once inhabited by indigenous people devoted harvesting corn, beans, gourd and chile, using artificial islands built into the lakes called chinampas as substitutes for crops.
Xochimilco was once surrounded by canals used as traffic chains to market the products harvested there, some of which still remain there for you to cruise through them on a trajinera (carriage) wrapped up in flowers by its owners.
Wejoytrip recommends enjoy a true fiesta, seasoned with mariachi music and Mexican antojitos on board of a trajinera through the one-off scenery of the Xochimilco Canals. Around the area there’s the Dolores Olmedo Museum, a must-visit destination where the most important works by painters Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera is exhibited.
Things to see and do trajinera trips, cultural tourism.
