Nature and adventure make the state of Durango an ideal destination for adrenaline lovers, with the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range as you playground. It is the home of the legendary Pancho Villa, one of the most important figures in the Mexican Revolution, and of famous writer José Revueltas. Durango is also known as “the land of cinema,” since it offers stunning landscapes of all its nature, serving as the background for many Westerns.
When you think of Durango, think canyons 400 meters (1,300 feet) deep, think thick and lush valleys and forests, think massive natural landmarks, like the basin of El Bolsón de Mapimi. Think of natural gems, such as the Rosario Grottoes, with a depth of 500 meters (1,640 feet), where you can observe stunning rock formations.
For the adrenaline junkie in you,
Wejoytrip recommends “El Salto del Agua Llovida,” a zip line which runs the length of a waterfall so deep it promises an adrenaline rush. You can also explore the many canyons, springs, precipices and forests. Another alternative to the zipline is the “Puente de Ojuela,” a more inclusive activity, but not if you are afraid of heights. The bridge is suspended over 100 meters (330 feet) in the air.
Durango is also a perfect destination for hunters and anglers. Here you will find a great variety of places to practice your sport of choice, whether it is hunting deer, hog, or wild turkey. For the anglers, there are many varieties of trout to be found, as well as many other species, making for fruitful and varied fishing expeditions. Durango’s rich wildlife makes it an ideal place to practice your favorite sport without damaging its ecosystems.
Durango City, capital of the state, offers marvelous architecture in its Historic Downtown, with almost 800 buildings constructed in centuries past. It was declared a Cultural World Heritage Site. Visit the Catedral Basilica Menor, the Plaza de Armas, and don’t forget to try the famous “caldillo Durangueño,” a hearty beef soup prepared with beef stock, tomatoes, onions, green chiles, and seasoned with cumin and salt. Don’t miss it!
If you happen to drive through the Baluarte Bridge, running from Durango to the neighboring state of SInaloa, be sure to have a camera with you. You will want to take a picture or two.
