To visit San Luis Potosí is to come into contact with history, pristine landscapes, revered traditions and ancient cultures in contact with modernity. All of it within reach. Its capital is known as “the four hour city,” since it is only a four-hour drive from cities like Guadalajara, Tampico, Monterrey, and Mexico City.
When visiting San Luis Potosí you might be surprised. Do you like adventure tourism, ecotourism, visiting mysterious towns and haciendas, archaeological zones, mountain climbing, or hiking through deserts and tropical rainforests? You can do all this and more in San Luis Potosí. But if you prefer peaceful places to rest or to explore museums and temples rich in art, you will also find it here. Not only this, but you will also find a wide array of spas and hot springs where you can relax surrounded by tradition. Or you can live the culture of the state through its festivals, with crafts of subtle beauty and exquisite exotic cuisine.
San Luis Potosí may not have the beaches of other Mexican states, but it makes up for it with its lands in the Altiplano (high plains), which in prehistory was the bottom of an extensive and ancient sea, where you can find marine fossils and ammonites.
Wejoytrip recommends The city of San Luis Potosí, known for its magnificent architecture, full of history which truly comes to life. It stands out with its streets and facades which will welcome you with open arms. Its Historic Downtown houses many beautiful mansions, baroque and neoclassical churches, museums, shops, and restaurants. Most of these stunning buildings are built using pink stone, giving a sense of visual harmony to this historic urban landscape.
A place not to be missed is Real de Catorce, a living legend of a town. Explore its ruins, ride on horseback, or ride a “Willy,” a 4x4 from the 60’s, as it zooms through the desert.
You must experience the almost surreal nature of Xilitla, a place which seems almost dedicated to inspire you, opening its doors to fill you with marvel and fascination. Located in a mountainous portion of land in the Huasteca region, it impossible for it not to be enchanting. Walk its steep streets, visit all of its attractions, and immerse yourself in the fog which can shroud the town during some of the year.
Valles City is one of the parting points when visiting archaeological zones, waterfalls, biosphere reserves, or many of the other cultural bounties offered in the Huasteca region.
We also recommend visiting Rioverde and Matehuala.
Things to see and do Climbing, scuba diving, hiking, ziplining, biking, spelunking, kayaking, waterfall jumping, camping, safari horseback riding, golf, spa, and temazcal.
